Staying Fit Throughout My 40s and Beyond

I’ve nevsoreer been one that loves to hit the gym but I absolutely LOVE to stay fit.  I am a runner and have been a proud member of Black Girls Run! for many years now.   I ran track all through high school and I also ran track in college and was a damn good 400 meter runner.   During the past 10 years, I’ve completed a few half marathons, many 10Ks, many 8Ks and I’ve lost track of how many 5K’s I’ve run but I  absolutely love to lace up, put the ear buds in and kick some asphalt.

I have a few running/fitness goals that I want to meet over the next 18 months.  I want to gain 5 pounds (I know.. fix your, I want to stay consistent with a running program, place in the top 3 in my age category in a 5K and I also want to do more strength training (my upper body is weak).

Knowing that I can’t do this alone since I am not one to hit the gym often, I went ahead and signed up to work with a Personal Trainer and join her fitness classes.  I joined Velvet & Steel Fitness in late June and went ahead and purchased a 3-Class pass just to make sure that I stick with it at least 3 times.  Well, last night was my 1st class and I am already sold!!  I took the Bodies of Steel – Total Body Workout class and it was a great total body strength and core workout.  I can’t remember the last time I worked my entire body like that! I was amazed at how much Robin, the owner/trainer, managed to get in during the full hour class.  We worked every part of our body and during the workouts, she would correct our form, explain the muscles we were using and she kept us all going strong.  Oh, not to mention her workout music is THE BEST ever!  If I wasn’t so darn tired from the weights, abs and cardio, I would have started dancing!

While I am naturally slim, I know that if I don’t work to keep my body in shape — it wont last.  Genetics will only take me so far as I age and lets face it, gravity is a BITCH.  I have a few races coming up this Fall that I’d love to run I know that if I keep incorporating weight training, it will really help me to finish strong!  I love doing workout challenges like the Sit up Challenges, Ab Challenges…etc so if you see any good ones, please let me know.

While I sing the praises of my new fitness studio and feel great about how well I did in my 1st class — let me just say that my arms feel like LED and my thighs are burning!  I am pecking out this blog entry as I lay on my bed with my arms laying across my sides and my wrists on the laptop. There will be no swift movement from me today at all and yeah, it hurt to put on my pants this morning too (smile).  I know that I have to do something physical today or else I will be a big ball of knots tomorrow.  I can’t wait to work past and through the pain and see a progression in the weights that I can use during my workouts.

  1. The 15 year old and I have been working out almost daily in the weight room this summer… just finished the 5th week (I cannot believe either he or I have stuck to our early morning workouts)! I do believe that I can tell a difference in my running… and even if it does not make me faster, being stronger will protect me from injury which as a 40something is MORE important to me. Be sure to stretch and get a foam roller if you don’t have one!! You go!!! I cannot wait to see a finisher’s medal around your neck!

      EXACTLY Angela!! The strength that we gain can and will ward off some common injuries and that is GREAT! I have a foam roller (or as I call it.. the HELL roller) and will use it this afternoon. I think you just gave me my workout today… foam rolling and yoga!! PERFECT for these sore muscles. Thanks for your constant encouragement and KUDOS to you and the 15yo! That is awesome!

  2. I started working with a personal trainer 3 weeks ago. Like you I wanted to be strong overall….and I’ve not given up yet so I think its a habit now…LOL! Can’t wait to see the results that I am looking for. I’m also hoping it will help me in my running even though I haven’t been doing much of that lately. Kudos to for getting out there!!! #PerserveTheSexy

      Good for you Shannon. I am naturally a lazy person so if not pushed…I just usually won’t do it (horrible, I know). Can you share your progress with me please? I will use that as a motivator to stick with it.

      • I sure will Aurelia! Right now I just feel more energized. I do feel stronger. Haven’t seen any real definition or tone yet. But hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day right? Just gotta keep pushing!!
